Urban Agriculture and Gardening

A narrow indoor garden pathway with wooden flooring, lined with various potted plants and greenery on both sides, and a sloped wooden and glass roof overhead.

Radix produces eggs and grows fruits and vegetables on a one-acre city block. We don’t use any chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers: we simply dress the beds with compost. The goal is to build healthy soil to produce resilient plants, not just replace synthetic inputs.

The Greenhouse lets us grow food year-round. It’s minimally heated and insulated, gathering most of its heat by capturing solar energy. In the colder months we can keep greens alive, start crops early, and offer hands-on learning even when there’s snow outside.

Its gutters collect rainwater into barrels. It’s one of the cleanest sources of water—naturally filtered through the rain cycle—and it's free. Rainwater is stored in tanks that also help regulate the greenhouse temperature in winter by providing thermal mass, holding heat. Capturing precipitation helps reduce sewer overflows during heavy rains, a big issue in cities like Albany.

Even without heat, our High Tunnel breaks the wind and keeps ice off plants which allows us to maintain fresh produce even as temperatures drop. The youth program is involved year round in maintaining the planting beds, and during their time here they learn how to cook and eat a variety of produce.

We offer a limited amount of farm shares each year containing a variety of fresh, organically grown produce. If you’re a CCI customer you can get your shares delivered; otherwise, pickup will be midweek at the farm.
